Beethoven

Music Awards

The Beethoven Society has always been didicated to the musical education of the young. Many of its members have been music teachers or professors. In earlier years, the Society made an annual contribution to the Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund, but it had no voice in the selection of the award recipients. Therefore in 1987 the Society decided to conduct its own Music Award program. Following is a description of the procedures:

  1. The candidate must be a graduating high school senior. Candidates may come from any high school.
  2. Candidates must be nominated either by a member of the Melrose High School Music Department, or by one of the Society's members.
  3. All candidates shall perform at a special meeting of the Society.
  4. Candidates are voted upon by the Society's members. The result of the vote helps in the determination of the amount of the award for each candidate. (All candidates receive at least a minimum amount in appreciation of their participation.)

In the 17 year period from 1987 through 2003, the Society has granted a total of $11,050 in music awards. Click here for a list of the 52 students who have been recipients of the music awards. The Society is happy that some of them have returned to perform at regular meetings and that others have been or presently are members of the Melrose Symphony Orchestra.
